Maternity Photo Tips

Thoughts and Tips

Moisturize your belly before the session to avoid any dry-looking skin. Especially if you’re looking to get a few bare-belly shots.

Nude panties and bra are best. If you’ve picked anything with black lace then black bra and panties are great!

Try to avoid wearing tight panties and bra. A looser fit will ensure that no lines will form through tighter-fitting gowns.

If you’re interested in any images of you in just your panties and bra then sets are perfect for this. Nudes, blacks, whites or any colored set you prefer. Soft colors and lace photograph best. This is also a great option to have just a blanket or cozy cardigan wrapped around you with your belly popping out.

Pay attention to your nails! A lot of images will be focused around your hands and having them on your tummy and cradling your bump. Hands are a huge part of any session.

If we will be heading into the water for any of your images then I suggest bringing a pair of flip flops that can get wet. This way you can walk easily into the water without slipping if there are rocks. We can take them off once you are in place. The dollar store usually has cheap flip flops during summer months, same as Old Navy. If it is possible to get clear or nude, we won’t have to take them off.

I am so excited for you and your family to have these images to look back on. Whether this is your first child or second or third, it is your legacy. Pregnancy is a chapter of a new beginning in any stage in your life and documenting it is something you will never regret doing. Maternity sessions are one of my favourite sessions to photograph because there is a natural excitement and love in everyone’s faces which shines through in every image. You get to see the love first hand of you and the bond you have created with your baby because sometimes you just can’t see that yourself. I can’t wait to give you the gift you can’t give yourself. I so look forward to our session.

Five Days Before Your Shoot…

  • Make sure your eyebrows are nicely shaped and groomed.
  • If you’re planning to visit a salon for a haircut or color, do so well before the shoot.
  • Be sure to get a manicure and pedicure for a flawless finish.
  • If you want, get a suntan. But within the five-day period, stay out of the sun to prevent sunburns or blotchy skin.
  • Don’t use spray tans.
  • Drink plenty of water for luminous skin.
  • Lower your salt intake to reduce your water retention.

The Day Before the Shoot…

  • Bathe, shave and moisturize.
  • Enjoy a quiet evening.
  • Try to get a good night’s sleep at least eight hours, if you can.

The Day of the Shoot…

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing on the day of your shoot. Tight clothing leaves lines that will stay on your body for hours after you’ve changed into something else.
  • The session usually runs 1-3 hours, depending on your schedule.
  • There is a standard model release that is signed by you.
  • Use clear deodorant.
  • Eat a light meal.
  • A photoshoot is also a workout. Legs are stretched, toes are pointed, backs arched, and your breath held. You will work hard, but it will be a blast!
  • I’ll coach you through every fun little bit of the process, from poses to flatter your body type to what expressions to make.
  • You will be nervous, just RELAX. I promise to make you relax to get the most amazing shots of you.
  • Plan on having the best fun day of your life!
